Memorial Day is the imagine line. We’ve seen a large enough sample of games to start trusting statistical trends for teams and players. Bad starts. Breakouts. Contenders. Pretenders. It’s real now. So are The Athletic's newest power rankings:
crush first pitches. Fact: They also do not swing at first pitches. Boston’s first-pitch swing percentage, 24.4 percent, is lowest in the majors. So are we to take away that the Red Sox should swing at the first pitch more? Or that they destroy first pitches precisely because they are frighteningly selective about which ones they slug? Yes and yes.
A couple more numbers to consider: The Red Sox are tied for first in the AL in most pitches per plate appearance , second in in-zone contact percentage andin in-zone swing percentage. That might seem like a random pull of Statcast stuff. But I swear it tells a story. The Red Sox are a patient team and sometimes selective to a fault. While they do not walk much, they are capable of working counts, are not prone to chase, and are poised to do damage on the strikes they swing at.
