Dara O Briain is exploring lunar mysteries in his latest Channel 5 series Wonders of the Moon - and admits that he found it strange returning to the Wicklow Mountains near his home
We know him best as a comedian, but did you know Dara Ó Briain is a keen amateur astronomer too? He’s celebrating his passion for planets in the new Channel 5 series Wonders Of The Moon With Dara Ó Briain. However, the 51-year-old admits his comedy career and its nocturnal hours often get in the way of his telescope time.
And, as part of the show, Dara heads to the area close to his hometown in County Wicklow, Ireland. “The Wicklow Mountains for me are Sunday drives and later Gaelic football matches against local villages around Wicklow where we would clatter into each other,” he says. Dara’s affinity for all things astronomical was inspired by a school trip to the lunar site Newgrange back in 1983 – a spot “well established in its solar importance” that he revisited while filming. Four decades on and Dara has developed a full-on fascination with space and now encourages parents to pass on that enthusiasm to their children.
“There is a period of life that is the move from sea to land and it is entirely because of the moon. Without that tidal move, we would not have evolved,” he says. Dara even got the chance to handle actual fragments of the moon in the show, but unfortunately he couldn’t fit in the special lunar gloves. “They gave me gloves but they were Professor Joy’s gloves and every time I put my hands in them, I just expanded the glove,” he says.
