Molly-Mae's should be proud of chipping away at the taboos around labour, birth and the postpartum period 🔵Opinion from Grace Holliday
Over the course of the 30-minute video, she shares, seemingly, everything. Some would say she overshares, but I always wonder why others think they have the authority to tell another person what they deem the correct amount of information to be. Rather than pet names and synonyms, she calls her vagina by its real name without hesitation, adding that in the week before the birth, it felt like there was a brick inside it.
Not only is she refreshingly frank, but she also acknowledges the parts of her birth that didn’t go as expected. A gel inserted to induce her birth was supposed to take six hours to be effective, she says; before adding, “no words of a lie, within 10 minutes of that gel being inserted…I was gagging in pain.. and that wasn’t even contractions.”
While I can absolutely see why such a retelling would scare some people, I also believe that the alternative does a disservice to everyone, particularly women. Preparation and education, for many, is the best tool they can possibly go into labour with; somethat the more prepared a woman is, the more straightforward her labour will be.
She acknowledges, too, the privilege of her experience, which seems to have happened at a private hospital in London, and that not everyone gets to experience such tailored care in such a comfortable environment. Glossing over this could have been an option, of course, as could skipping over it altogether, but it wasn’t one she chose to take.
I was curious to see how the video would make me feel, as someone who had wanted a vaginal birth but had to have a mandatory, planned c-section with my own daughter. In an Instagram post shortly after the birth, she refers to having had a “natural birth”, but in this video acknowledges that, adding that she feels “disappointed in herself” for having used that term.
