More than 200 distress calls were made from small boats in the Channel to humanitarian hotlines last year,Utopia 56, a humanitarian organisation supporting migrants in Calais, received 214 calls for help from small boats in the Channel in 2022 alone, including from dinghies carrying children and families., some of those trying to cross to the UK reported that their engines had stopped working, while others said water was flooding into their boats.
Once a distress call is made to the hotline, this is passed to either the French or UK coastguard, depending on whose waters the boat is in. The case is then assessed by the coastguard who can respond directly, or in the UK, and request the help of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute to carry out a search and rescue.
Alarm Phone said that it alerts the British and French authorities to each distress case it receives and believes that they “mostly act on the information we provide”, including launching search and rescue operations. Boats in distress in the Channel can be dealt with by the RNLI, but these operations are initiated and co-ordinated by the UK coastguard. The RNLI said a launch could be authorised where there was a risk, or threat of risk, to lives, and that it would always launch if it were appropriate to do so., pleading for help and saying: “We are in the water and we have a family.” What is believed to be the sound of a child crying could be heard in the background.
