A total of 512 children were admitted to England’s hospitals with Covid in the week up toGovernment data also shows 59 under-fives infected with the virus were hospitalised in a 24-hour period between Christmas Day and Boxing Day.The figures, published on the official coronavirus dashboard, does not show how severe the children’s Covid symptoms were.
A hospital admission with coronavirus is defined as someone testing positive in the 14 days before they are admitted or during their hospital stay. The new figures for hospital admissions between December 19 and Boxing Day show 226 children aged six to 17 were admitted with the virus in that period.The total of 512 children marked a 24% rise compared to the last week of November – when the wave of Omicron cases was yet to gain full pace – during which 412 children were admitted.Children aged 12 to 15 can currently get up to two vaccine doses with their parents’ consent, while 16 and 17-year-olds will soon be offered booster jabs.
