Figures come after human rights activists call for government to scrap Rwanda deal that will force refugees to start new lives in Africa
Increasing numbers of migrants have been sailing in small boats out of French territorial waters into the English Channel
Instead, a staggering 43 per cent of asylum claims that have received an initial response were not considered sufficiently, because the government wants to send them to a safe third country. However, since 2018 only a small number of people have actually been moved to a safe third country due to the UK’s failure to make new agreements with EU countries and the Rwanda deal struck up under Boris Johnson’s former government has yet to reach a final decision.
The amount of people arriving in small boats continues to rise from 300 in 2018 to more than 30,000 this year alone. IPPR has called on the government to implement new and safe legal routes for asylum seekers and to improve cooperation with France and the EU.
