Lee Anderson has also previously said that he supported the death penalty in principle

A Nottinghamshire MP has outlined his support for the death penalty "in principle" following the trial of Lucy Letby. Brendan Clarke-Smith, the Conservative MP for Bassetlaw, believes the "ship has sailed" in terms of actually bringing capital punishment back in the UK, but says his support for the concept has always been a personal view.

Bassetlaw's MP shared a video on social media following the Letby trial in which former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher outlines her support for capital punishment. Mrs Thatcher says in the clip: "When some criminals go out and do such hideous, cruel crimes, and in particular when they do such terrible things to children, I think they've forfeited their own right to life.

"It therefore seems strange that support for capital punishment is portrayed by many in the public eye as being some sort of extreme and minority held opinion."
