A Perthshire MP has written to home secretary Suella Braverman expressing “profound” concerns about the prospect of enforced room sharing for asylum seekers at two Perth hotels.
His letter states that some individuals there have been waiting two years for a decision, with a few even going on hunger strike last year out of desperation over their lack of application progress. It concludes by calling the room share plan “inhumane, deeply flawed and reprehensible”, and urges more financial support for the local authority.A letter was also sent by the leaders of all PKC’s political groups to the home secretary and immigration minister “deploring the current UK Government policy towards asylum seekers” and calling for financial support from both UK and Scottish governments.
Asylum seekers have left their own country and seek protection from persecution or serious human rights violations. Any asylum seeker who refuses accommodation provided for them may have their government support withdrawn, adding that room sharing “is not new”. Families are not expected to share with other families, single males or single females.
