Tory MP Nigel Mills urged the Government not to disregard the 'principle' that people should have a third of their adult life in retirement
He said there was a “general pervasive fear” among workers that “they will never get to state pension age, it will always be pushed completely out of reach”.
Speaking during a backbench debate on the issue, Mr Mills noted that “nobody that spoke, spoke in favour of bringing forward increases of the state pension age” and urged ministers to consider in their upcoming decision about state pension.increases, that has to be paid for” though working longer but he said the “data does not now show, sadly, life expectancy increasing”.
A review into the state pension age is due to be published in the coming months and will consider whether the current timetable for when someone can retire is fair., despite a fall in life expectancy increase projections. Pensions Minister Laura Trott said it was current Government policy to “bring the rise to 68 forward to 2037-39”, adding: “That is the baseline. We’re required under law to review this every six years and that is what is being undertaken currently.”
