ALL-DAY FUNDRAISER: Sarah was diagnosed with terminal mesothelioma after finding a lump on her side in 2009
While in remission in 2014, Sarah, a single mum to Jason, 32, and Jack, 20, landed a council settlement, with her lawyers establishing, on the balance of probabilities, that school asbestos exposure had likely caused her mesothelioma. Sarah was repeatedly tested for cancer and received the all-clear in 2019, but tragically, she discovered her cancer had returned in May.
Sarah said:"I didn't really know what asbestos was when I was at the school – I can remember hiding my cigarettes in the ceiling tiles, and they were made of asbestos; you could see it when you pushed up the tiles, but we didn't think anything of it at the time. I'd lost a lot of weight for no reason and found a lump on my side.
After reaching the 10-year mark after tests every three months, she received the all-clear and felt 'really pleased', contemplating a 'tattoo or something like that to celebrate'. But Sarah was 'scared to leave the comfort blanket of the hospital' as everyone 'looks after you', and they would 'wipe your tears when you're upset' and constantly check the status of her cancer; devastatingly, Sarah learned the cancer had returned this year.
