What parents need to know
Many of the car parks where you find parent and child bays such as supermarkets or shopping centres are owned by private companies, and each firm will have its own rules for who is, and who isn’t allowed to park in these spaces.One mum from Norfolk found out the hard way.
She was hit with a £260 Penalty Charge Notice for breaking the car park’s rules on using the parent and child spaces, because although she had her 2 children in the car with her, she didn’t get them out of her vehicle when she visited the shop. The supermarket car park’s owners argued that: ‘no children exited the vehicle and therefore the driver did not require the extra space provided and should have parked in a regular parking bay.’
Each car park should have signs clearly indicating their rules for using the parking spaces, and it’s worth checking these when parking to try and avoid unwanted fines. According to the RAC, parent and child bays are reserved for parents or guardians with one or more children under 12 years old.Although it’s not illegal to park in a parent and child space if you don’t have a child under 12 with you, you could receive a PCN if you’re suspected of breaking the car park’s rules.
