Brooke Combe has performed at the M&S Bank Arena and at the Pier Head with Jamie Webster
Brooke Combe, a 23 year-old from Edinburgh, has often felt like she didn't really fit in. Growing up as a mixed-race woman in Scotland, she found herself creating pop and heartbreak songs, a body of work she now describes as generic and “dead cliche”.
She nodded: “[The 1970s] are my biggest inspiration and I want to see how we can bring the 70s and 80s thing back, and make it a little bit more modern.” “His message, his voice, his courage almost, to speak out on things that there is such divided opinion about…I do think, as young people, we do need to be more confident in doing stuff like that.”
“I feel the support from them, I feel the love. I see how excited they get when we sing together. It's got a very special place in my heart for sure.” There hasn’t been universal support for Brooke’s music generally however. She believes, the more she has expressed her roots and black history, the more “uncomfortable” she has made some people feel.
However, Brooke insists she is unfazed by “hateful comments”. It’s a sign of how far she has come, especially considering her first ever live performances.
