“Without adequate, paid, paternity and parental leave, we cannot solve inequality at work or at home,” writes NellFrizzell.
And that is only possible, to put it very bluntly, if you’re around. You have to be with your baby; to change the nappies, clean the bedding, go to the playgroups, attend the appointments. The daily acts of parenting that make you, eventually, a parent are often only possible if you are not also being expected to do other things. You cannot spoon mashed-up banana into a tiny mouth if you are also on a train to work.
As a father or co-parent, the amount of paid parental leave you are entitled to and when you can take it is, often, something that has to be negotiated between you and your employer. And at the moment – in the words of the brilliant campaigning organisation– too many fathers and same-sex parents have been denied a fair amount of paid parental leave. According to the government website, employees can choose to take either one week or two consecutive weeks’ leave.
When I read that Pregnant Then Screwed had launched Let’s Talk About Six – the demand that all new parents are given six weeks’ paid leave at 90 per cent of their salary – it sounded both radical and insignificant. Six weeks could make such a difference and yet, over a lifetime of working, it is so little. If my partner had been given six weeks off from work to be at home with his son, I suspect his whole experience of fatherhood would have been tangibly different.
