AIs must not be allowed to replicate themselves and 'exfiltrate into the wild' outside of human control, Sam Altman warned in testimony before the US Senate
, told a US Senate hearing that there are clear dangers if strict safety standards are not in place for even more powerful AIs likely to be created over the next 20 years.
Called to give testimony before Congress for the first time, Mr Altman said generative AIs – whose ability to create text and images in seconds based on user prompts has already surpassed humans in many areas – are facing a “printing press moment” as they are rapidly adopted and used for everyday tasks.” to “mitigate the risks of increasingly powerful models” as the AIs grow even more intelligent.
Mr Altman spelled out a series of concerns about the potential impact of the technology, acknowledging there would be a “significant impact on jobs” and huge risks of misinformation. He said: “Outsiders will use them to affect our elections, insiders to manipulate our markets and our political systems. Democracy itself is threatened.
