Alongside Dr Katherine Crichton at the University of Exeter, the lead author of the study, and a team of fellow palaeontologists and ocean modellers, professor Pearson looked back at how the twilight zone had fared during the last two major warm periods in the earth’s history. They found that during those periods, roughly 50 million and 15 million years ago, the twilight zone was capable of supporting far less life than it does today.

The twilight zone is reliant on organic matter sinking from above, but when the waters of the sunlight zone were much warmer bacteria digested this food before it could reach the depths of the ocean. It was only over a vast period of time that the unique and delicate ecosystem of the twilight zone developed.
