A perfect centrepoint to an enjoyable walk through farms and woodland
With sweeping countryside, stunning coasts, picture postcard villages, historical remains and ruins, iconic landmarks, and well kept nature reserves, there's something for everyone out there. On a sunny weekday, we decided to head out to one of those spots which is well loved by those nearby and lesser known further away.
The route started with stretches across multiple farms separated by stiles before a path offered us a glimpse of the long path leading to the historic Hoghton Tower. A stretch of woodland led us towards a crossing over a railway track which we arrived at moments before a train passed by. Hoghton Bottoms weir is one of many barriers on the River Darwen and sits at the top of a picturesque sandstone gorge. The effect of that is a crashing waterfall which offers a beautiful and relaxing haven within the woodland.
