NASCARChicago was the most-watched Cup race on NBC in six years, and despite record rainfall, the sanctioning body managed to get the event in on Sunday. NASCAR reflects on a 'historic' weekend & the challenges they faced throughout it.
The participation of the three-time Supercars champion came as part of Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91, which provides an opportunity for international motorsport stars to compete in the Cup series.Surrounding the two days of racing were torrential rains, lightning, flooding and several canceled concerts, which were an important part of what was billed as a festival-like weekend.
“I would say first of all a huge thank you to the city of Chicago. The city showed up so well from the backdrop on NBC to the energy among the fans in the city and the crowds. It was certainly remarkable to see.” Throw in a record rainfall and the complexity of repeated lightning holds, which forced the grandstands to be emptied, and the potential existed for a disaster of a debut for NASCAR’s version of street racing.
