Drivers were sent to Lincoln and Sleaford as part of the diversion

National Highways have shared an update on diversions as they continue resurfacing work on the A46. The work has been ongoing on the dual carriage since August 21, so that the road can be resurfaced between the Winthorpe roundabout and the exit to Brough, near Newark.

The works are due to end in late September and have been taking place overnight between 8pm and 6am Monday to Friday. However, some concerns have been raised over the length of the diversion in place. One diversion route on the National Highways website takes motorists more than 50 miles out of the way via Lincoln and Sleaford to avoid the closure. However, National Highways have explained that diversion routes must be suitable for all vehicle types, such as HGVs, and this means avoiding rural roads.

"But we appreciate that roadworks can cause disruption and frustration for drivers. Safety is always our priority and it is important that our diversion routes, agreed with the local authority, are appropriate for all vehicle types - including HGVs - which means avoiding rural roads. "Significant signage has been in place to advise drivers of the scheme and diversion routes since work began last month and we have not been aware of any previous concerns. But we will review the signage to see if any changes are required.”
