NBA Hall of Famer Willis Reed died at the age of 80, the National Basketball Retired Players Association announced. Reed won two NBA championships and an MVP during his career with the New York Knicks.
In 1976, Reed became the first Knick player to have his jersey retired at Madison Square Garden.No matter how brief a tour of Knicks history is, it has to include Reed. New York has won only two championships — one in 1970 and one in 1973 — and probably wouldn’t have any if not for Reed.
He is the only regular-season MVP as well as the only Finals MVP in the franchise’s history. He made five All-NBA teams and an all-defensive squad. Knee injuries limited Reed’s career. He played for only a decade. He was 31 years old when he played his final NBA game. But his legacy with the Knicks is about more than just compiling numbers. The image of him jogging out of the tunnel, attempting to play injured in Game 7 of the 1970 finals, is one of the iconic moments in Knicks history. As the story goes, Reed’s gusto inspired the Knicks to a blowout victory.Knicks fans, even ones who weren’t around in the 1970s, relish in these moments. The organization hasn’t had much success since Reed’s playing days.
