At least 8,000 Ukrainian civilians have been killed in the 12 months since Vladimir Putin’s invasion and more than 13,000 injured, according to the UN
Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the official toll of 8,006 civilian deaths and 13,287 injured was “only the tip of the iceberg” of suffering for ordinary Ukrainians since the invasion on 24 February last year.
“The toll on civilians is unbearable. Amid electricity and water shortages during the cold winter months, nearly 18 million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Some 14 million people have been displaced from their homes.” The vast majority of the fatalities and injuries – some 90 per cent of the total – were caused by explosive weapons such as artillery shells, rockets and missiles, which have rained down on Ukraine’s town and cities in their hundreds of thousands.
A further 632 civilian casualties – 219 killed and 413 injured – were caused by mines and hazards such as unexploded ordnance.
