Jeremy Hunt is emerging as a possible unity candidate for caretaker prime minister after his surprise appointment as Chancellor, Conservative MPs believe
The Cabinet veteran could be favoured by a broad swathe of MPs instead of someone like Rishi Sunak, who could be too divisive for those still loyal toMr Hunt, who had backed Mr Sunak in the Tory leadership contest, accepted the job as Chancellor from the Prime Minister on a day of turbulence in Westminster.
Elected for the safe seat of South West Surrey in 2005, Mr Hunt was a rising star under David Cameron’s leadership and was appointed culture secretary in the 2010 coalition government. After Boris Johnson resigned as foreign secretary in 2018 over Mrs May’s Brexit plans, the then PM turned to someone she believed would be more reliable and less explosive – Mr Hunt.
Mr Hunt was chairman of the Commons health select committee when the Covid-19 pandemic took off, and took ministers to task over their response.
