Stephen Nelson, according to the Dodgers, will call at least 50 games on SportsNet LA next season. He'll become the only Asian American play-by-play announcer working for a MLB team. It’s his dream job and as he says, 'It’s a massive responsibility.”
“You’ve opened that door,” Sims told Nelson. “Now keep that thing open.”
“It means everything to me,” Nelson said. “To be in a position where I can help further pave the way for the next wave of AAPI broadcasters or minority broadcasters — because if you look around the sport, and sports in general, it’s pretty embarrassing, to be frank. That’s something that I do not approach lightly at all. It’s a massive responsibility.
The broadcasting talent includes Orel Hershiser, Davis’ primary partner on broadcasts, as well as a team of other color commentators such as Nomar Garciaparra, Eric Karros, Jessica Mendoza and Dontrelle Willis. Tim Neverrett, who filled in for Davis on TV in his absence at points last season, remains part of the broadcast team with both TV and radio responsibilities.
The months to come will present something of a whirlwind. Friday marked Nelson’s final episode of “Intentional Talk.” Next comes a packed spring schedule in which Nelson will call a college baseball tournament in Arizona, then tour various Cactus League camps for MLB Network before heading to Tokyo to call games for the World Baseball Classic.Subscribe to The Athletic for in-depth coverage of your favorite players, teams, leagues and clubs.
