New drive to publish black British writers by S_Fleary1
BLACK BRITISH writers are being urged to enter writing competitions to help tackle the lack of diversity in the publishing industry.
Founded by former teacher and educational book editor Fabia Turner, the 2022–23 award focuses solely on picture books and, the manuscripts must feature an authentically drawn black lead character. This year, research on children’s books has shown there has been a decrease in the number of children’s bestsellers that contain a Black main character.conducted the study which analysed 1,511 books from the New York Times bestseller lists for children’s books that were published between 2012 and 2021.
She said: “With just under a month to go until our submission window closes, we want as many Black writers as possible to hear about the incredible prizes and writer development opportunities on offer, all made possible with the support of our partners.”
