New rules for Personal Independence Payments will begin in August

New rules for Personal Independence Payments will begin in August, the Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed. Across the country more than three million people now claim the benefit, which is intended to support people with long-term ailments and disabilities access help with extra living and mobility costs.

"Award rates and their durations are set on an individual basis, based on the claimant's needs and the likelihood of those needs changing: durations can vary from nine months to an ongoing award. The department added: "The light touch process will complement our policy of regular reviews, which are designed so that payments accurately match the current needs of people claiming PIP. The process is also in line with our focus on reducing unnecessary assessments for people with long-term conditions, as set out in the recent White Paper - Transforming Support: The Health and Disability White Paper.

How PIP reviews are carried out If your PIP claim is due to be reviewed in the coming months you will receive a letter from the DWP telling you what to do and what forms you need to fill in. Those who are sent the new shorter six-page form will only need to give brief information and any updates on their condition. Other claimants will need to fill in the regular 16-page form.
