The five-year 'Better Off West Lothian Tackling Poverty Strategy' has been unveiled at a conference, aiming to address the cost of living crisis and inequality in the region. The strategy builds on the success of a council programme launched in 2018 and focuses on providing support to those struggling with insufficient income. The council's Advice Shops, which have helped thousands of people this year, have received national accreditation for their services.
A new strategy to tackle the cost of living crisis and deep rooted inequality in West Lothian has been launched.
The strategy takes a fresh approach to the challenges of lack of sufficient income, with the Anti-Poverty service continuing to work with partners across the council and others including the Department of Work and Pensions, Social Security Scotland, local credit unions and West Lothian Food Network to help those most at risk.
Chair of the West Lothian Community Planning Partnership Board and Depute Leader of West Lothian Council, Kirsteen Sullivan was one of the guest speakers. "The Advice Shop sits within the Anti-Poverty Service and is a free, impartial and confidential service to help the people of West Lothian with a focus to alleviate poverty and to promote inclusion and equality through advice, assistance and advocacy. I would urge anyone who is worried about their finances to please get in touch with the council's Advice Shop service today."
Councillor Sullivan told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "With the challenges facing our local communities, it is even more important that we focus on the added value that the Community Planning Partnership can bring."
