Make no mistake, this is not saying Newcastle should be expected to progress — it is still an exceptionally strong group. But aside from that, the strength of Newcastle’s group should not be used as an opportunity to make excuses. With the possible exception of PSG, at least for now, Newcastle are their financial equals. Their tactical system is arguably more deeply embedded by their opponents, and recruitment over the summer has provided squad-wide depth. This is a team who named a stronger bench than Manchester City when they played last month.
Newcastle earned their place in the Champions League in Europe’s toughest league, and do not need to rely on an underdog narrative. Any semblance of an inferiority complex should be swept away on the breaths of St James’ Park.
