The Conservative Party 'should not put the country through' another Boris Johnson premiership, MP Damian Green has said. Read more:

It is"morally unavoidable" not to have a general election, Conservative peer Zac Goldsmith has said.

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly endorsed Mr Johnson today, saying he had"learned lessons from his time in Number 10 and would"ensure the focus is on the needs of the country from day one". In an article for The Telegraph, she said she had backed Boris Johnson"from the start" but the country was now in"dire straits" and needed"stability" and"efficiency".

"Boris also has a proven track record of reform and success whilst mayor of London, and I believe he is the best person to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of government."But yesterday, an ally of Ms Braverman told the PA news agency that she had been personally"heavily courted" by both Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak.

"My sole focus today, as was yesterday and the day before, was convincing colleagues of the merits of Rishi Sunak as a candidate to become leader of the party and prime minister." "Having dealt with an economic crisis in the wake of what was going on with coronavirus and lockdown, saving millions of jobs and having steered this country through choppy waters before, he is the person that is best placed to do it again."Conservative MPs will vote on Monday to decide who they would like as the next prime minister.

This will be an opportunity for contenders to make their case to MPs, who will then vote in a secret ballot for the next PM. We will get the result of the first MPs’ ballot at 6 o'clock. If there are three in the race, the MP with the least votes will be knocked out. Mr Johnson's supporters have downplayed the fact he is lagging behind his former chancellor in public support from MPs, saying he is"clearly" running, although he has not officially declared this.Former home secretary Suella Braverman has said she will be backing Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership contest as he"understands the enormity" of the issues facing the country and"will not shy away from making the hard decisions".

Ms Braverman went on to say in the current climate the country needed a prime minister who could"command support" and"meaningfully work with others", before adding:"One person can build that team: Rishi Sunak."
