GM Arpon Basu drove a hard bargain — I think he was bluffing me about taking Michkov at No. 5 if he didn’t get the return he needed — but ultimately, the price was fair to move up for one of the most tantalizing talents in the draft. Giving up pick No. 17 hurts, but Michkov is the kind of dynamic scorer the Red Wings so desperately lack. There is of course risk here, and I’m doubling down on that risk by trading up.
He is Central Scouting’s third-ranked European skater behind Leo Carlsson and Matvei Michkov and widely regarded as a safe choice.Trading down from No. 5 and passing up the opportunity to draft Michkov might be looked back upon as disastrous, but the hope was that one of Reinbacher, Leonard or Dvorsky would still be there at No. 9. They’re all gone, so the Canadiens still wind up taking on some risk here by picking an undersized forward in Benson.
