The stark warning comes aswas told a predicted shortfall in family doctors could leave one in four people in the UK without a NHS GP, prompting a “public health catastrophe”.
Unrealistic demands placed on GPs are making them ill, leaving many poised to either quit the profession or even the country, DAUK wrote in a letter to Ms Coffey. “Therefore, without your urgent action to stabilise primary care, the NHS will become a sinking ship. GPs will cut their hours, quit the NHS or quit the country. This is happening already.”
“We just absorb patients onto lists with ever higher ratios, but some practices are starting to close their lists as they cannot cope with more patients. I would anticipate more GPs will look to close their lists as time goes on,” DAUK’s GP lead, Dr Lizzie Toberty, toldProfessor Martin Marshall, chair of the Royal College of GPs, warned that shrinking GP numbers combined with soaring workloads are threatening the future of general practice in the UK.
