Health leaders have already been warned of a funding gap that could stretch to £20bn by 2024/25, and the prospect of further cuts and having to identify even more savings is 'incredibly grim'

“Enforcing further efficiencies will be incredibly difficult to manage, and we are concerned this could further delay access to treatments at a time when trusts are doing everything they can to navigate these challenges. Ahead of any “difficult decisions”, we must consider the impact on health and social care.

Health leaders have already been warned of a funding gap that could stretch to £20bn by 2024/25, and the prospect of further cuts and having to identify even more savings is “incredibly grim”, one leading health expert said. Matthew Taylor, chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said: “Jeremy Hunt is probably one of the most experienced politicians who knows how pressured things are across the NHS and how both patients and staff have been let down by the failure of successive governments to ensure it gets the funding it desperately needs.

“At a time when health leaders have already been warned of a funding gap that could stretch £20bn by 2024/25, the prospect of further cuts and having to identify even more savings is incredibly grim. If that happens, with 132,000 vacancies,, we are at a point where a serious conversation is needed about what the NHS can realistically and safely deliver. This is his moment of truth.”

Pat Cullen, the Royal College of Nursing’s general secretary and chief executive, said: “If the new Chancellor is serious about spending money more wisely, then he must invest in the nursing workforce. Asking the Department of Health to make yet more efficiencies – in order words, to cut costs –“Mr Hunt must put patients first.
