Grant Archibald - who will retire on December 31 - said it had been a privilege and pleasure to serve the people of Tayside
NHS Tayside's chief executive Grant Archibald will retire five years to the day since he took the helm.Professor Archibald today told NHS Tayside staff he will retire on December 31, 2023.
In his announcement to staff, Professor Archibald said: "In the many remarkable experiences I have had in my near 40-year career in the NHS in Scotland, it has been my privilege and indeed my pleasure to serve the people of Tayside, and particularly to return to Ninewells Hospital where I started my career in my home town of Dundee.
He added: "The COVID pandemic was an extraordinary trial for all of those working in healthcare in Tayside and our population, and one which required an enormous, unprecedented and ongoing effort. However, by working together we were able to continue to deliver care and treatment for our communities ensuring they were looked after by our many dedicated teams. I look forward to watching NHS Tayside’s continued success and I wish you all the very best.
In 1984 he began his NHS career on the National Graduate Trainee Programme. His first permanent job was in Dundee Royal Infirmary then Ninewells Hospital.
