A patient could not be transported 300 yards from the helipad into Crosshouse Hospital in Ayrshire.
This has resulted in an appeal by NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde for patients only to turn up at A&E if their situation is urgent or life-threatening.
But after the helicopter landed it became clear there were no ambulances available to complete the short journey from the helipad to the hospital. A Scottish government spokeswoman said: "We are aware of this incident and understand that the ambulance service are looking into the circumstances. She added: "Despite our staff working hard to assess and treat patients as quickly as possible, some patients have waited significantly longer than we would wish and we unreservedly apologise for that."Scottish Conservative health spokesman Dr Sandesh Gulhane said the story was a damning indictment of the current state of the health service.
"Going back and forth between different health boards, having already been in an air ambulance, will have caused huge distress and anxiety for this suffering patient."
