. Film-maker Jafar Panahi is still only a few months into a six-year sentence for his work – his movies have been illegal in his home nation for their content since 2010 – and in this probing, thoughtful drama, made before his arrest, he plays a version of himself.for their artistic pursuits –ominously pre-empts Panahi’s fate, as his on-screen counterpart tries to make a covert film on the boundaries between Iran and Turkey.
Bakhtiar and Zara star in the film-within-a-film, as a couple trying to escape the country with fake passports – only Zara soon discovers that the fake-passport gambit is only so realistic because they are really engaging with smugglers. The prospect grows increasingly dangerous as the local villagers become suspicious of Panahi’s presence on their turf, beginning to see cracks in his story that he’s a photographer from out of town.
