A late-night summit between Johnson and Sunak, was unsuccessful and no deal to launch a joint ticket was reached. One MP supporter of Mr Johnson told theipaper: “Boris reached out. A deal was not done.”
He backed Mr Sunak, saying he was “very confident” the former chancellor would stand.
But Mr Sunak has received some significant support, in a major blow to the former PM’s return to frontline politics. She admitted she had “on occasion” been a member of “the Boris Johnson fan club”, but she said the Tories are not “organising a popularity contest”, and stressed the party is “not a vehicle for any one individual’s personal ambitions”.
Mr Baker went on to say while Mr Johnson was “undoubtedly a wonderful man” he did not have that “meticulous compliance with tedious rules” and he was “bound to implode”.But Mr Johnson’s supporters are confident that if he made it to the final two, he will win in the final online ballot of Conservative party members with whom he remains hugely popular.
