Professional surfer Al Mennie is no stranger to endurance challenges that chill the bones just reading about them.
Each year, participants meet before dawn at one of 16 walks across Northern Ireland and walk as the sun comes up, symbolising the sense of hope that is at heart of the event. “We all go through different levels of light and darkness in our lives, so I'll go from sunset through to sunrise, depending how long it takes me to surf 154 waves."
“There are a lot of things that have to be right,” he says. “On that basis, it could take me anywhere from four hours to all night - I don't know how long. “I went to those places and I came home with the knowledge and the know-how and I was like, 'I'm going to take that and do that here. We've got these gigantic, wild waves off our coast and I want to pursue it'.
“I was a little boy and the person that took their own life was a teenager. So that maybe left a scar that I didn't even realise was there.
