There is renewed interest in asking for more revenue-raising powers to part-fund Northern Powerhouse Rail
Northern leaders have reacted with fury after the Government indicated there was likely to be yet another U-turn on rail upgrades.
It comes amid ongoing chaos on existing northern railways that has seen hundreds of services cancelled by a number of rail operators, including TransPennine Express, Avanti West Coast and Northern. “I hope the new Prime Minister and Transport Secretary will visit West Yorkshire to see the opportunity for themselves and discuss with local leaders before making any hasty decisions.”
Bev Craig, the Labour leader of Manchester city council, also reacted angrily to Mr Shapps’ comments, tweeting: “‘Not much point?’ in investing in infrastructure to improve connections, increase capacity and help unlock the economic potential of the North? As for there being no point in digging tunnels, best not tell him about London….”
