As the first Black head coach to win an ACC regular-season women’s basketball title, Niele Ivey knows what comes with running a historic program like Notre Dame's. It can be stressful. ChantelJennings on how meditation helped Ivey find balance.
, and coaches worried players might feel like they were struck twice by lightning. But there was Ivey — calm as ever.Ruth Riley remembered Ivey feeding her confidence during that year, when she was named the national player of the year. Kelley Siemon Deyo broke a bone in her hand that season. She remembered Ivey making a point to tell media she had faith Siemon Deyo would recover — and how Simeon Deyo fell back on that small quote when she doubted herself.
“She’s intuitive like that, and she always has been,” Siemon Deyo said. “She comes in and she sees you. … She just has this incredible ability to adapt and to be and to see people. She’s just so intuitive that way, which is I think such a gift.”When she settles in now for her daily meditation and gratitude rituals, she thinks about what this season means for herself and her team.
In a recent one-on-one film session with Cass Prosper, the 17-year-old early enrollee, Ivey thoughtfully threaded the needle of being critical without sounding like she was criticizing. Prosper took notes on a legal pad, writing down all the parts of her game that must improve. Ivey pointed out to Prosper a missed box-out and guard-to-guard screen Prosper didn’t correctly defend. But interspersed through the clips are highlights, too, when she provides only praise.
“Here,” Ivey said with a smile, rewinding and playing three times a move that resulted in a steal for Prosper, “Look at you. Look at this. Next time, you’ll dunk this, right?” There’s a careful, carefree balance to this moment — Ivey and Notre Dame both need more out of this player but also don’t need this player putting undue pressure on herself; Ivey needs to build a teen’s confidence and her game without hurting her confidence in the process. There is both intuition and skill at play here, a point guard setting up a player for her best shot.If there’s worry in Ivey’s mind, she didn’t show it.
