Many want to see more work to tackle tram dodgers

Cracking down on fare dodging and extending the route are among solutions that have been suggested to problems facing Nottingham's tram system. Operators of the network recently issued a plea for Government support along the same lines as the £2 cap on bus fares that has been introduced.

In response to our opinion article on the subject, Nottinghamshire Live readers have been sharing ways in which they think Nottingham's tram system could be strengthened. Users including 'Ian444' called for a tougher crackdown on fare dodging, with 'Jezzr' saying that more staff are needed on every tram to stop fare dodgers being given "free reign.

Ultimately, some readers argued that initiatives such as employing more staff and extending the network could not happen without the kind of Government support that tram operators have called for.

"If there is a single, critical investment it could make in the area's future, it would be in expanding it further and helping Nottingham keep pace with the rest of the world." A Department for Transport spokesperson previously said on this matter: "While we recognise the importance of trams for communities, light rail is largely devolved in England, so local authorities are ultimately responsible for the financial sustainability of their systems.
