Number of births rises for first time in a decade but more women waiting longer 👉 A fertility expert said the cost of living crisis could put women off
There were 578,562 deliveries in NHS hospitals in England during 2021-22, a 3.4 per cent rise on the previous 12 months. However, the figure is around 90,000 fewer than 2011-12 when there were 668,936 deliveries.
Deliveries for age groups of women aged 30 to 39 years increased while those other age groups have declined. Deliveries among women aged under 20 have more than halved since 2011-12 with 13,104 deliveries in 2021-22. Natural birth remains the most common as a proportion of total deliveries but has decreased from 66 per cent in 2011-12 to 47 per cent in 2021-22. Caesarean deliveries increased from 12 per cent to 20 per cent and induced deliveries from 22 per cent to 33 per cent in the period 2011-12 to 2021-22., said: “These statistics reflect a growing trend towards women having later in life and fewer children overall.
“However, we know that for many women and couples, they are unable to fulfil their reproductive goals because of financial factors. We know that many women would love to have children earlier in life, and to expand their families, but from the high cost of childcare to the motherhood pay penalty, many feel unable to do so. The job market has never been more precarious, and we know the current crisis has hit women’s employment particularly hard.
“As a result, we may well see these trends continue into the future as women and couples choose to delay having children due to the cost of living crisis.”
