Nurses' union boss urges Health Secretary to 'see sense' on pay as row over strikes deepens 🗣️ “He brings me down to meetings and tells me I can talk about anything but pay,” RCN chief Pat Cullen said
Speaking outside St Thomas’ Hospital, Ms Cullen said she hoped Mr Barclay would “see sense”, and start addressing pay demands.
“As a nurse first and foremost, I live on optimism that at some stage, this secretary of state will see sense and start to negotiate with me on behalf of the 220,000 nurses I represent here today, we owe that to every single one of those nurses, he owes that to patients, and he owes that to the NHS,” Ms Cullen said.
“We’ve never got into talk, that’s the point. He brings me down to meetings and he tells me I can talk about anything but pay, and the meetings can be cordial, however the crux of this dispute is about addressing nurses pay, putting back into their pay the 20 per cent that this government has been taking off them for the past 10 years.”
On Sunday, The Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, told Sky Mr Barclay would talk to the unions about improving the health system’s performance and working conditions, but not about pay – which he said was decided by an independent pay body.
