Ofsted issued a damning report after visiting Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Engineering College in Skelmersdale, West Lancashire
A once 'Good' rated school has been branded 'Inadequate' as inspectors blasted 'a stark decline in the quality of education'. In a damning report, Ofsted said pupils at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Engineering College have for too long been "let down by entrenched low expectations of what they can achieve".
"They are starting to take some positive action. However, the shortcomings at the school are wide-ranging and endemic. There is limited capacity to bring about the necessary improvements." The report adds: "A small number of disadvantaged pupils are currently denied the opportunity to study a broad range of subjects. Added to this, some of the most vulnerable pupils in key stage 3 are not taught by subject experts. This undermines the ambition for these pupils even further, making them even more likely to underachieve."
The school overall had been labelled as needing improvement after the last inspection in 2019, compared with a 'Good' rating in 2015. However, rather than improving as ordered, it has seen a sharp decline in standards and Ofsted now says it needs external support to be brought up to standard. "Prior to the latest inspection, we had already taken steps to strengthen the school's leadership and the impact of that is now being seen. The inspector recognised this in the report, noting that our new leaders have an accurate view of what needs to be done, and had already started to take 'positive action'.
