Cash is being sunk down a bottomless black hole, simply so that Suella Braverman can show how much unnecessary suffering she can inflict
The current backlog of cases stands at around 130,000 people. Ten years ago, it was just 10,000. Supporters of the Government like to claim that this is the result of more arrivals, but that’s not right. The backlog was already growing significantly in 2018, when just 299 people arrived in small boats.
The Government’s plan is simply to formalise the situation. It has turned procedural inadequacy into a legislative duty. The Illegal Migration Act, which was recently passed by Parliament, simply refuses to process the claims of those who arrive in the UK. Then it commits to removing them.because it has been ruled unlawful
Neither can the Government return people to their home country. There is a safe return arrangement with those from EU/EEA member states, Switzerland and Albania. But the vast majority of small boat arrivals this year were not from countries listed as safe for returns. They’re from places like Afghanistan, Syria, Eritrea, Iraq and Iran. Sending anyone back to those countries would break international law and reduce the UK to the status of a global pariah.
This plan, if you can call it that, is obviously immoral, but it is also punishingly expensive. The Government intends to massively grow the detention estate. The redevelopment and reopening the Campsfield House and Haslar Immigration Removal Centres are expected to cost at least £240m. Then there is the price of detaining someone. The cost of 40 days detention – the time limit before bail applications are allowed in the Illegal Migration Act – is estimated at around £7,000 per person.
