A group of female Ethiopian skaters have carved out a space to practice and bond in a society that does not always offer women freedom of movement and opportunity.
Micky Asfaw, 28, a founding member of Ethiopia Skate says that seeing Challa skating in her uniform after school served as a powerful symbol for other women and girls, an example of a woman “doing a new sport with the guys.” Her membership opened up new opportunities for the group, he says, and “without a doubt it changed everything.”
Over a year later, most of the women and girls in the group are generally comfortable riding the boards. A few can do tricks; a few compete. But as the group leader, Challa doesn’t push competition: “We try to build friendships, help other girls, and build confidence.” The impact has been profound: “I believe skateboarding changed my life,” says Denkneh Seble.
Still, the girls and women find ways around these obstacles. “The most important part is the community, which is full of love, a family we created that makes us feel like home,” Denkneh Seble says. “Each person has unique traits and comes from a diverse background with colourful histories. A day with them is a day I never want to miss.”
