The town has been caught up in controversy after Labour's former candidate who wants to be the next MP made 'deeply offensive' comments about Israel - but there are other things occupying voters' minds
Rochdale is at the centre of a political storm. Weeks before the town goes to the polls to choose its next MP, Labour's former by-election candidate Azhar Ali has apologised for 'deeply offensive' claims he made about Israel.
About 20 per cent of the electorate in Rochdale is Asian, according to the PA news agency, with polls nationally suggesting Labour's vote could be hit by Asian people unhappy with the party over Palestine and its perceived support for Israel. Some of Mr Galloway's supports have told the Manchester Evening News that they believe most Asian residents will back the Workers Party of Britain leader.
The 24-year-old holds Sir Tony Lloyd, the late Labour MP whose death last month triggered the by-election, in high regard. "He stood up for what he felt was right," he explained. "But these other ones - the only time you see them is when the election is coming close." "The Palestine issue is a big issue for a lot of Muslims," he says. "The Labour Party has taken a stance we don't agree with."It's a strong Labour constituency, but they're not standing up for the common man. We're alright, but there's a lot of people struggling. We've got kids going hungry. It's absolutely not on. Most people are hard working. They can't make ends meet.
"If I was to vote, I'd vote for Billy," she said. "I know him. He's like us. He knows what it's like in Rochdale. What we've gone through."
