The remit of the legislation has expanded beyond its original premise
from the very outset. The Government’s attempt to finally regulate the internet has long been promised, but what began with good intentions is risking becoming a Frankenstein’s monster of a piece of legislation.
As the Bill has gone through green paper, white paper, pre-legislative scrutiny, it has become increasingly cumbersome asAs one member of the House of Lords who has worked tirelessly in this area toldrecently, rather than doing one or two things well, the Online Safety Bill is trying to solve every problem with the internet – and doing it badly.
Most of the recent debate has concentrated on how the legislation will protect children from harmful content. In light ofafter being dragged into a social media rabbit hole of self-harm content, it is right the Government take action. But rather than sticking to the plan of regulating social media firms and penalising them if they fail to implement a proper care of duty for their users, the Government has allowed the remit to expand.
