Celtic Park in Derry, Armagh’s Box-It Athletic Grounds and O’Neill’s Healy Park have been mentioned as possible venues
The prospect of Ulster Rugby playing at a GAA ground would have been utterly unthinkable just a few short years ago.
And with work on the pitch making Kingspan Stadium unavailable for Ulster’s pre-season programme of games, the prospect of playing at one of the province’s main GAA grounds has been mooted, with the Ulster Council having been reportedly approached by their rugby counterparts. The first American football game was staged there in 1946, an exhibition between American servicemen returning from the second world war, while another, a US Air Force League game to raise funds for the Irish Red Cross, was held at GAA headquarters seven years later.
It would be 2014 before American football returned as UCF and Penn State faced off, but a hugely significant threshold had been crossed in the meantime. The Liam Miller testimonial in 2018 proved a tipping point for the opening of county grounds as Pairc Ui Chaoimh hosted a legends game between Manchester United and Republic of Ireland/Celtic selections.
