The Environment Agency said water company United has been spilling sewage into Cark, or Cartmel-in-Cark as it is officially known, during dry weather in breach of its permit. The retired farmer says: "There used to be salmon and trout in the river here, but not anymore. Now it's just mainly eels."We keep our windows closed, especially on race days.
It used to have a water-powered cotton mill in the 18th and early 19th century employing 400 men, women and children.Cark Airfield now hosts a parachute school where boy band JLS have jumped out of a plane.
