A drive is now on to ensure empty homes can be brought back into use “with minimal delay”
There are more than 300 privately-owned homes in West Lothian which have been empty for more than a year.Now, as the council faces a crisis in housing waiting lists and difficulties in refurbishing council houses trashed by selfish tenants, a housing department officer has been appointed to ensure that empty homes can be brought back into use “with minimal delay”.
There are more than 11,000 people on the housing waiting list and more on waiting lists held by Registered Social Landlords who work in partnership with the council “There are 322 long-term empty homes, that is defined as empty for a year or more, in West Lothian, and 89 second homes. The report to the committee added: “In addition, owners that approach the council with empty properties can be considered for the private sector leasing scheme.”
