Let's not even begin to unpick the laws of time travel and how their futuristic jaunts have probably caused timelines to branch off . Let's instead set our sights on the sticky situation they're in in 1999.
The missing handset is with STF Underground agents Heck and Naldo, who stole it back in 1988, the retrieval of which began this unfortunate chain of events. Alas, there's a snag in their plan. The voice they hear back on the walkie is not Heck and Naldo's but Mac from 1988. They realise that the person that they communicated with back in 1988 on Hell Day was this Juniper standing shoulder to shoulder with them in 1999. This could only mean one thing: these turn of events are a closed loop. Everything that has happened has already happened before and is in the process of happening all over again.
Before they can leave, however, they must meet Grandfather . The Apparent leader of The Old Watch tells them they've completely messed up their own timeline and tries to convince them that they've been manipulated by the STF. They step outside to complete the deal but KJ has a few niggling last minute questions, like why the execution of other STF members out of time doesn't mess up the sacred timeline they're so hellbent on keeping intact.
Prioress forces them to follow her to the Cathedral and gives them a little history lesson where she explains that the STF historically hold The Old Watch responsible for the terrible future they come from. The ticking clock is classic television cue for more threats on the horizon but it doesn't make the suspense any less delicious.
