However, Ms Howes defended the paper’s reporting in her op-ed, writing that she was “unswerving” in her belief from the first meeting with the young person’s parents. “The issue involved a young, vulnerable teenager and a man in a position of power,” she said., published on 7 July, accused an unnamed BBC presenter of “giving the teen more than £35,000 since they were 17 in return for sordid images”.
On 11 July the young person released a statement via their lawyer insisting the story was “totally wrong”. According to the BBC, the lawyer said the denial was sent toOn Wednesday it was revealed thatafter his wife released a statement that said he was in hospital with “serious mental health issues”.
Describing her first meeting with the parents, she wrote: “In calm and measured tones they explained how their beloved child had fallen into the grip of every parent’s worst nightmare – a drug habit already having devastating consequences to the young person’s mental and physical health.“Make no mistake, this was a terrified mother who needed help.” She added that the mother was “at breaking point.
